The Liberation of Sita by Volga which attempts to look at Sita’s life from an alternative angle.
Structured a collection of short stories about conversations with various women characters from the Ramayana, it provides a take on their different journeys they have taken to break free and live life on their own.
Surpanakha, Renuka, Urmila and Ahalya all share their own stories and in a way help Sita break free from the guilt that ‘she has done something wrong’ to ‘she is the one who has been wronged’.
The author of this book is ‘Volga’ – Her real name is P. Lalita Kumari and she is a well known Telugu poet and writer.
Her works have sparked debates on feminism from the times when feminism was barely a thing in India.
Diminutive and unassuming to look at, it’s only when you hear her speak that you realise the power and strength of her ideas ( Yep, we got a chance to hear her during the Jaipur Literary Festival )
